Learning a language by making a movie is a new, motivating, and fun teaching method originally developed by our institute. This method was first applied in our Workshop funded by the EU Grundtvig Program (Agreement Number 2010-1-IT2-GRU13-12506) and has produced outstanding results.
The workshop entitled "Learning Italian Through Movie Making" took place from the 8th to the 15th of May 2011 with 15 enthusiastic participants from 9 different countries. The participants who came from very different backgrounds in terms of education, occupation, and ages worked (and learned) together for a common goal: to create a short movie in Italian, a foreign language for all of them. At the end of the workshop all of the comments were very positive: “everything was on a high level. Learning by playing is very interesting and fun. I found this workshop as the best experiences of my life,” a young Polish woman. “The methodology of the workshop is very appropriate,” adds a German participant, and “The workshop was great! It was the best one I attended in my life. I was positively surprised by the results at the end of the workshop,” a comment written by a Romanian participant.
The method “Learning a Language by Making a Movie” has clearly proven its strengths: to motivate very different people in terms of age, education, and cultural backgrounds for learning a foreign language. Its application is very flexible because all the participants working together clearly improved their Italian skills even if they were not at the same proficiency level. Finally, the continuous interaction among the participants allowed them to learn more about each other’s different cultures and countries because of the good personal relationships they established while learning (and working) together. This is probably the best result of this workshop, and the biggest accomplishment for the organizers!
