This course provides the students with the tools to understand the large changes concerning the city of Florence that have occurred during the last 40 years.

It is an efficient way to familiarise oneself with the complex reality of one of the most beautiful cities in the world. For this reason, we do not only focus on the history of the city, but instead broaden the teaching to include the continuous contrast between tradition and modernity.

The course will mostly take place out of the classroom, aiming to provide the students with direct contact to the places mentioned in the programme. This is in order to fully understand and appreciate all of the events which – both positively and negatively – have characterised the evolution of Florence. At the end of the programme, the students will have an impression of Florence and its society that is less romantic, but certainly more realistic.
